Notes from the Wellness Center
Pandemic Flu
Information
The Illinois State
Board of Education and Department of Public Health
have asked schools to be proactive in planning for
the possibility of the occurrence of a pandemic
flu outbreak. While there is no pandemic flu in
the US at this time, history tells us that another
one will almost certainly occur. An
influenza (flu) pandemic is a widespread outbreak
of disease that occurs when a new virus appears
that people have not previously been exposed to.
Pandemics are different than seasonal out breaks
of influenza. Seasonal flu is caused by viruses
that people already have built up some immunity
to; flu shots are available to help prevent
widespread illness, and impacts on society are
less severe. A pandemic flu spreads easily from
person to person and can cause serious illness
because people do not have immunity to the new
virus. An especially severe influenza could lead
to high levels of illness, death, social
disruption and economic loss. To find
out more about pandemic influenza see the Wellness
Center Webpage at http://www.sfhsnet.org/top/studentsvcs/wellness-home.htm#PandemicFlu |

Pro-life Group
Meeting
St. Francis' pro-life group,
Spartans for Life, invites you to join us
Thursday, January 22, at 7:15 am in the library to
pray for an end to abortion. This will mark
the 36th anniversary of the 1973 U.S. Supreme
Court ruling of Roe v. Wade which legalized
abortion. St. Francis students and parents
will join with people from across America,
especially those participating in the March for
Life in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the
sanctity of life and ask for God's help in the
protection of the
defenseless. |
Time Out For Reading
January 22nd
Thursday, January 22nd
is the date for this month's student-selected,
Time Out for Reading novel, "The Perks of Being a
Wallflower," by Steven Chbosky. This is a
story of what it's like for Charlie to grow up in
high school. More intimate than a diary, the story
unfolds as a series of letters that are singular,
unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know
where he lives. We may not know to whom he is
writing. All we know is the world he shares with
us. Caught between trying to live his life and
trying to run from it puts him on a strange course
through uncharted territory. Charlie's world
encompasses first dates and mixed tapes, family
dramas and new friends. It is that special
time when all one requires is that perfect song on
that perfect drive to feel infinite.
All students who have read "The
Perks of Being a Wallflower" are invited to
participate in the discussion. Interested students
are asked to sign-up in the library starting
Thursday, January 15th. Refreshments will be
served. |

The Girls Empowerment
Group is by popular
demand!
Messages from the media, often repeated by
peers, can set the stage for the belief that
teenage girls should be more concerned with
appearance and ability to win male approval than
with their own interests and aspirations. Studies
show the toll extracted by these messages on
girls' self-image and well-being: girls are
7-times more likely to be depressed and 3-times
more likely to have a negative body image.
However, by encouraging girls to have positive
expectations for themselves, providing them with
opportunities to develop competence and confidence
in their abilities we can increase their power to
make right decisions and avoid risky behaviors.
And that is what the Girls Empowerment Group is
all about.
Why should students sign up for
the group? Through discussions and activities the
group will aim to help girls make good life
choices, feel good about themselves, and become
confident in their talents and abilities.
Some of the topics the group will focus on
are: assertiveness skills, self-esteem, peer
pressure, self-image, girls' health issues, good
decision making skills and stress management. In
addition, the group will also address the impact
of acculturation and media exposure on girls' body
images and eating behaviors.
Enrollment
Deadline is January 20.The group will meet once a
week for 6 weeks.
If you would like to
find out more info on the Girls' Empowerment Group
or any other groups, please contact Mrs. Rupp at
ext. 104. |
