Quote of the Week: "If you do not
hope, you will not find what is beyond your
hopes." ~ St. Clement of
Alexandra
As you might have guessed, we have been
inundated with requests to do something for the
people of Haiti. Parents, coaches, sports
teams, clubs, students and faculty--everyone has
been asking what they can do! There are many
great ideas floating around and many organizations
sending appeals. In order to pool our
efforts, Kate Kowalski has offered to head a
committee to organize an event. We are hoping that
all teams, clubs, faculty, parents and students
that want to assist in the planning efforts will
send a representative to the meeting on Tuesday,
January 26th at 2:40 pm in Room 104. If you
cannot attend and wish to still be a part of
things, please let Kate know. We are
a generous people! We are always pursuing
good things to do! Let's organize something
that will not only help the people of Haiti, but
demonstrate our faith through cooperation and
community to our students by doing ONE thing-
together -very well!

Boys
Basketball Sponsors "Jimmy V Night"
February 6th ~ a cancer research fund-raising
event
Hello St. Francis community,
My
name is Jack Spangler, and I am a senior on the
St. Francis Boy's Varsity Basketball Team. Cancer
is a disease that has undoubtedly affected the
lives of friends and loved ones close to each of
us.(Personally, I've lost three grandparents to
cancer.) It is why we, the basketball team, have
taken it upon ourselves to host a cancer research
fund-raising event called "Jimmy V Night." Who is
Jimmy V?
Jim Valvano used to be head
basketball coach at North Carolina State
University. On March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano received
the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPY
awards (the academy awards of sports). His speech
was one that is still remembered today. He talked
of his courageous battle with cancer and how he
was setting up the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer
Research. That foundation still exists today
having raised more than $90 million for more than
300 cancer research projects.
The
first annual SFHS Jimmy V Night will be
February 6th during our home game vs.
IMSA. We will raise funds for the Jimmy V
Foundation as follows:
- Selling event T-shirts. Our goal is to sell
500 T-shirts to students, parents and friends of
SFHS;
- Charging an extra dollar for admission that
night, with the extra buck going to the Jimmy V
Foundation;
- Selling raffle tickets for the chance to win
a pair of tickets to an upcoming Blackhawks game
and a Cubs game this summer. The drawing will be
held at halftime; and,
- A voluntary donation box at the admission
gate and concession stand the night of the game.
(Donations can also be mailed to school with
checks made out to "The V
Foundation")
T-shirts will be sold at lunch during the
week leading up to the game. We are also hoping
to have them available for sale at our home game
vs. ACC (Jan. 22). Each STUDENT purchasing a
T-shirt will also receive one complimentary raffle
ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be sold at
$2 apiece or 3 for $5 during the school T-shirt
sale, at the Jan. 16 (IC) and Jan. 22 (ACC) home
games, and during the first half the night of the
event.
We encourage you all to attend this
event if possible. It is a tradition that we are
trying to establish with the Boy's basketball
program. Many have been touched by the efforts of
the Girl's Volleyball Team and their "Volley For
The Cure" fund-raising events. Now it's our
turn to give back as well. Hope to see you there.
And always remember..."Don't give
up... Don't ever give up." -Jim
Valvano
Sincerely,
Jack

Attention
Parents, Especially Sophomore Parents
On February 1, you will receive a
letter detailing a summer course, "Intensive
English and Math: Preparing for the College
Boards." Taught by Mr. Kolodziej, Ms. Pratscher,
Mrs. Kustak and Mrs. Johnson, this course prepares
hard working sophomores for all sections of the
SAT and ACT, which students will write next
year. The course has other benefits;
for example, experience has shown that enrolled
students get a head start on their challenging
junior English and math courses. In addition,
students have the opportunity to write all of
their summer book tests. This
year, the course will run from June 14 to July
22. The course meets twice a week for two
hours each meeting; at St. Francis, the course
meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11 or
6:30-8:30 p.m.; at Benedictine (where we also
offer a 1-3 p.m. class), the course meets on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will find more
information in the forthcoming
letter. Please note that we create
class sections on March 15. Therefore, if
your son/daughter wishes to enroll for a specific
class time, please submit his/her application by
that date. Students may enroll any time
after March 15, but they may not receive the time
of their choice. Especially morning classes
usually fill quickly. If you have any
questions about "Intensive English and Math,"
"Pre-algebra Math," or "Study Skills," please feel
free to call English Department chairperson Mark
Kolodziej at 668-5800, extension 1202. You may
also contact him on his cell,
708-651-4356. |
